A Graduate Speaks
The following is from a speech given by a recent graduate of Human Options’ Second Step program.

“My family and I came to Second Step after having successfully completed Human Options’ emergency shelter program. Our lives changed instantly for the better upon our acceptance into the program. We received countless hours of counseling both in-house and within the community. We received excellent legal advice and representation from a very knowledgeable and successful attorney who specializes in domestic violence. We received assistance with such things as car repairs, childcare, school expenses and clothing needs for the children. Our stay at Second Step resulted in changed lives. The impact will be far reaching now that the cycle of violence has been broken in our family.

My nine-year-old son summed it up best upon leaving the program when he was asked to explain what he felt was the most positive change. He said quite seriously and without hesitation, “I don’t have to grow up and be a batterer. I will grow up and be a great dad and kind to my wife!”
